W. Otto Miessner , 1880/05/26 (Huntingburg, Indiana)‒1967/05/27 (Connersville, Indiana). Educator, conductor and composer. Diploma, Cincinnati Conservatory; studied voice with Alexander Heinemann in Berlin. Miessner apparently wrote this piece while teaching music in Connersville, Indiana, shortly before he became the very first public school band director in America. After a career that took in such positions as Director of music schools at Milwaukee State Teachers College, teaching at Northwestern University, founder of the Miessner Institute of Music in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, head of the Department of Music Education at the University of Kansas, co-editor of music textbooks for the Silver-Burdett company and President of the Miessner Piano Company of Milwaukee, he returned to Connersville upon his retirement, obtained an “emergency permit” to serve as a music teacher again, but was told that he would have to take a class in teaching to retain his permit.
