George Whitefield Chadwick , 1854 (Lowell, Massachusetts)‒1931 (Boston). Organist, composer, and educator. Studied under Reinecke, in Leipzig, and Rheinberger, in Munich. Head of music department, Olivet College in Michigan. Teacher of harmony, composition, and instrumentation at New England Conservatory of Music; appointed Director in 1897. Prolific composer in all forms: orchestral, choral, opera, chamber, sacred, and songs. Founder of the Music Teachers National Association. Responsible for the "Sinfonia" part of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
