Johann Baptist Cramer , 1771/02/24 (Mannheim)‒1858/04/16 (London). Brought to London when only one year old, Cramer studied piano with Benser, Schroeter and Clementi; in composition, he was largely self-taught. A touring concert pianist in his teens, he established a music publishing firm in 1828 (J. B. Cramer & Co., which also manufactured pianos). He managed the firm until 1842. In addition to his once-celebrated piano method and many piano pieces, he composed 9 piano concertos, 124 piano sonatas, a quintet, and this quartet.
